Women’s Apparel Market - Italy Ranks First in EU Women’s Clothing Production

In the period from 2007 to 2014, production on the women’s apparel market showed mixed dynamics, falling from 269 million units in 2007 to 155 million units in 2014. It dropped with a CAGR of 7.6% over the period under review. In value terms, EU women's clothing production decreased to 2,137 million EUR in 2014, falling by 8.5% annually.

The countries with the largest production of women's clothing in absolute volumes were Italy (38 million units), Romania (36 million units), Spain (31 million units) and Portugal (8 million units).

Over the period from 2007 to 2014, all leaders showed negative dynamics in relative values: Italy (-10.3%), Romania (-0.1%), Spain (-7.7%) and Portugal (-0.3%). However, the share of Romania increased (+10 percentage points), while the share of Italy illustrated negative dynamics (-6 percentage points).

Italy dominated in EU women's clothing production and ranked fifth in trade. In 2014, Italy exported the lion's share of its total women's clothing output. Of this amount, 18% was supplied to Germany, where Italy's women's clothing held a 3% share of total Germany imports.
