By virtue of a nearly 40% jump in exports in 2014, Germany assumed the second spot in the global pistachio trade. In 2014, Germany exported 12 thousand tonnes of pistachios totaling 161 million USD, 39% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Italy, where it supplied 23% of its total pistachio exports in value terms, accounting for 27% of Italy's total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, Germany was a net importer of pistachios. Over this period, imports consistently exceeded exports in value terms. In physical terms this difference was even more pronounced.

The U.S. and the Netherlands were among the other main global suppliers of pistachios in 2014. The fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Greece (+20% per year) and the U.S. (+19% per year). The U.S., the global leader in the pistachio trade, continued to strengthen its position in the global export structure.

Germany's top 5 trading partners in 2014 were the Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, with a combined 76% share of Germany's pistachio exports. The share of Italy increased significantly (+13 percentage points), while the share of Spain illustrated negative dynamics (-13 percentage points).
