The Netherlands can doubtless be called a land of bicycles, since this type of transport is used by a great share of the population on a daily basis. It is also a destination for bicycle tourism, providing special routes for bicycle lovers from across the globe. It is no wonder that this country is one of the major producers on the bike market in Europe. However, over the recent years, the production of bicycles in the Netherlands experienced a slight decline, making way for Germany to take the lead.

In general, the EU bicycles and other cycles market showed mixed dynamics over the last few years. The slight decrease in 2011 (-X% Y-o-Y) was followed by a X% increase in 2012. European consumption of bicycles and other cycles decreased by X% in 2013, amounting to X billion euros in wholesaler's selling prices. In physical terms, the decline was the same, by X% to X million units.

The gradual decrease in the EU bicycles production over the period 2008-2011 was followed by slight growth from 2012-2013, reaching X million units, which was far below the highest level of production of bicycles recorded in 2008 (X million units).

The EU growth in bicycles consumption is expected to speed up to X% (currently +X%), following the increase of prices. In the past, bicycles consumption was fueled by rising purchasing power, and nowadays, the economic situation improvement in Europe is expected to boost the market growth.

The countries with the highest levels of production in 2013 were Germany (X million EUR), the Netherlands (X million EUR) and Italy (X million EUR), which together accounted for X% of total output. In the Netherlands, the production declined by X% annually from 2007-2013. The remaining countries showed slight growth in value terms: Germany (+X% per year), Italy (+X%), Portugal (+X%).

In 2013, Switzerland (X million USD), the Russian Federation (X million USD), the USA (X million USD) and Norway (X million USD) were the main destinations of the EU exports, and together made up X% of total exports in value terms. While the share of the Russian Federation increased, the share of Switzerland illustrated negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
