Germany Leads in EU Iron Tube Production despite Local Industry Downturn

From 2008 to 2014, EU production of iron tubes, pipes and hollow profiles showed mixed dynamics, falling from 24,118 thousand tonnes in 2008 to 18,705 thousand tonnes in 2014. It dropped with a CAGR of 4.1% over the period under review. In value terms, EU tube and pipe production decreased to 22,619 million EUR in 2014, falling by 4.6% annually.

Germany was the largest producer of iron tubes, pipes and hollow profiles in absolute volumes (3,560 thousand tonnes). It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (586 thousand tonnes), Portugal (209 thousand tonnes) and Sweden (184 thousand tonnes).

Positive dynamics in iron tube manufacturing among the main producing countries from 2008 to 2014 were recorded in Portugal (+3.5% per year) and the Czech Republic (+1.9% per year), while for the other two EU leaders, Germany and Sweden, the paces of growth were negative.

Germany dominated in EU tube and pipe production and ranked second in trade. In 2014, Germany exported 72% of its total iron tube output. Of this amount, 10% was supplied to the Netherlands, where Germany's tubes and pipes held a 29% share of the country's total imports.
