Germany Became the EU Leader in Women’s Hosiery Production and Trade

From 2007 to 2014, EU women's hosiery production showed a steady decrease, falling from 2,139 million pairs in 2007 to 1,352 million pairs in 2014. It dropped with a CAGR of -6.3% over the period under review. In value terms, EU women's hosiery production decreased to 1,677 million EUR in 2014, falling by -3.1% annually.

The countries with the largest production of women's hosiery in value terms were Germany (459 million EUR), Italy (336 million EUR), France (227 million EUR) and Portugal (158 million EUR).

Positive dynamics in women's hosiery production among the main producing countries from 2007 to 2014 were recorded in Portugal (+4.6% per year) and Germany (+5.9% per year), while for the other two EU leaders (Italy and France) the paces of growth were negative.

In value terms, Germany dominated in EU women's hosiery production and trade. In 2014, it exported 88% of its total output of socks, stockings and other women's hosiery. Of this amount, 14% was supplied to Austria, where German women's hosiery held a 53% share of total Austria's imports.
