Ferrero Hazelnut Award Winner to Be Revealed on October 1st at Expo Milano 2015

One of the biggest confectionary producers in Italy and in the world, Ferrero, is an honored participant at the Expo Milano 2015. Acting as the "Confectionery Specialities Official Partner", the company aims to share its experience in high-quality product innovation, as well as highlight the care that goes into making Ferrero's success possible.

Ferrero will interact with Expo visitors by constructing eight installations that will be converted into social facilities after the event is over. Additionally, with the aim of enhancing and propelling the hazelnut industry forward, Ferrero is launching the "Hazelnut Award", which will be presented to researchers who come up with the best solutions regarding implementation of innovations in hazelnut growing and harvesting, as well as improving the industry on the whole.

Currently, the three best projects and plans are: "New cultivation systems for more profitable and sustainable Hazelnut growing" submitted by Università degli Studi di Perugia, Italy; "Developing a modern hazelnut industry by innovative crop technology and plant material" by Institut de Recerca i Tecnologias Agroalimentàries, Torre Marimon, Caldes de Montbui , Spain in collaboration with DISAFA - Università degli Studi di Torino and Dipartimento SAF, Università degli Studi di Palermo; and "Improvement hazelnut production incorporating novel technologies for the most important world production areas" submitted by Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias, INIA Carillanca, Chile.

These three applications were selected from more than forty submitted projects by the Independent Scientific Commission established at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Piacenza. All contenders for this award had until the end of June to submit their works. The winner will be announced at the Exposition during the Ferrero Hazelnut Award Ceremony taking place on October X, 2015.
Set up only this year, the Ferrero Hazelnut Company is designed to connect all the hazelnut supply chain activities from Ferrero's own Agri farm to sale of semi-finished and finished hazelnut-based products. The company defines its mission as advancing the hazelnut industry globally, offering innovations, sustainability and best farming methods.

Undoubtedly, all the core ingredients of the company's main products are considered strategically essential, and thus are treated with special care during every stage of production. As an irreplaceable ingredient in Nutella, Ferrero's world's famous hazelnut cocoa spread, hazelnut is addressed with cutting edge cultivating techniques. With this in mind, Ferrero acquired the biggest Turkish hazelnut producer, Oltan, last year.

At present, Turkey is in control of the hazelnut market. In 2014, Turkey exported X thousand tons of hazelnuts totaling X million USD, X% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Italy, where it supplied X% of its total hazelnut exports in value terms, accounting for the lion's share of Italy's total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, Turkey was a net exporter of hazelnuts. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms exports and imports were at identical levels.

Italy and Georgia were among the other main global suppliers of hazelnuts in 2014. The fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Chile (+X% per year) and Georgia (+X% per year). Georgia, by virtue of this sustained growth, was able to significantly strengthen its position in the global export structure.

In addition to Italy, Turkey's top X trading partners in 2014 were Germany, France, Canada and Switzerland, with a combined X% share of Turkey's hazelnut exports. The share of Italy increased (+X percentage points), while the share of Germany illustrated negative dynamics (-X percentage points).
