EU Woven Flax Fabrics Market Displays a Pattern of Decline

From 2007 to 2014, EU production of woven fabrics of flax showed a steady decrease, falling from 90,343 thousand square meters in 2007 to 28,737 thousand square meters in 2014. It dropped with a CAGR of 15.1% over the period under review. In value terms, EU flax fabrics production decreased to 191 million EUR in 2014, falling by 7.9% annually.

Italy was the largest producer of flax fabrics in absolute volumes, with 11,790 thousand square meters. It was distantly followed by Spain (3,894 thousand square meters), Lithuania (3,222 thousand square meters) and Belgium (2 279 thousand square meters).

Each country displayed negative dynamics of production in the timespan from 2007 to 2014. The lowest annual rates were recorded in Spain (-18.7%), followed by Italy (-15.2%), Lithuania (-10.7%) and Belgium (-7.3%).

Italy dominated in EU flax fabrics production and trade. In value terms, it exported the lion's share of its total woven fabrics of flax output in 2014. Of this amount, 11% was supplied to Germany, where Italian flax fabrics held a 55% share of total Germany's imports.
