China Ranks First Globally in Garlic Exports, with $1.5B
China dominates in the global garlic trade. In 2014, China exported X million tonnes of garlic totaling X million USD, X% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Indonesia, where it supplied X% of its total garlic exports in value terms, accounting for essentially all of Indonesia's total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, China was a net exporter of garlic. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms this difference was even more pronounced.
Spain and Argentina were among the other main global suppliers of garlic in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Chile (+X% per year) and the U.S. (+X% per year). Despite this increased competition, China was still able to significantly strengthen its already leading position in the global export structure.
In addition to Indonesia, China's top X trading partners were Viet Nam, the U.S., Brazil and Malaysia, with a combined X% share of China's garlic exports. The share of Viet Nam surged (+X percentage points), while the share of the U.S. illustrated minor negative dynamics (-X percentage points).
