Citrus fruits, loaded with Vitamin C and assorted fibres, are an invaluable addition to a healthy diet. The most commonly consumed citrus fruits are oranges, mandarins, lemons, limes, grapefruits, and pomelos. They are generally grown in subtropical and tropical climates

Global citrus production has been on an upward path recently, primarily due to increasing areas of cultivation, rising worldwide disposable incomes, and shifting consumer preferences towards healthy products. Although mainly consumed in developed countries, per capita citrus fruit consumption has been growing in developing countries as well.

All in all, the global citrus industry is anticipated to continue its growth, supported by government-sponsored programs that highlight the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables for a healthy diet. Growers engaged in this industry, however, are up against a variety of barriers, mainly volatile weather conditions, assorted citrus diseases, and imports from low-cost countries. Thanks to global trade there is now a year-round availability of citrus fruits on the major global markets.

Although grown in a large number of countries across the globe, it is in China where citrus fruits were first cultivated and continue to flourish. Chinese citrus production is situated in a large area extending from Zhejiang on the east coast down to Guangzhou province in the southeast. Production takes place across south-central China west to Chongqing, and in the Sichuan provinces located near the Tibet Plateau.

In Brazil, citrus trees are grown in all of the States, save for the Rio Grande do Sul, where cold weather issues persist. The country's natural conditions, low cost land and labor, quality research technology, and strong infrastructure, are some of the major factors which have made citrus production in Brazil one of the most efficient and low cost crops in the world.

In 2014, Russia (X%), Germany (X%), France (X%) and the Netherlands (X%) were the leading destinations of citrus fruit imports, together making up X% of global imports. The share of Russia increased (+X percentage points), while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2014, Spain was the main global supplier on the global citrus market with a X% share of global exports. However, the fastest growing suppliers from 2007 to 2014 were Egypt (+X% per year), Turkey (+X% per year) and China (+X% per year).

China dominated in global citrus fruit production and ranked fifth in trade. In 2014, China exported X% of its total citrus fruit output. Of this amount, X% was supplied to Viet Nam, where citrus fruit held a X% share of total Viet Nam's consumption.
