Baryte Exports from China Seen Growing, Totaling $348M in 2014

China dominates in the global baryte trade. In 2014, China exported 2,673 thousand tonnes of barytes totaling 348 million USD, 25% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the U.S., where it supplied 62% of its total baryte exports in value terms, accounting for 81% of the U.S. total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, China was a net exporter of barytes. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms, the difference was even more pronounced.

India and the U.S. were among the other main global suppliers of barytes in 2014. The fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Mexico (+63% per year) and the U.S. (+25% per year).

In 2014, China's top 5 trading partners were the U.S., the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and the Republic of Korea, with a combined 83% share of China's baryte exports. The share of Saudi Arabia increased modestly (+3 percentage points), while the share of the U.S. illustrated negative dynamics (-3 percentage points).
