In 2023, the South Asian asparagus market increased by X% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption recorded a remarkable increase. The level of consumption peaked in 2023 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Asparagus Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, asparagus production fell remarkably to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asparagus exports contracted notably to $X in 2023. In general, exports showed a deep reduction. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, India (X%) and Bangladesh (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nepal (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Bangladesh saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nepal ($X) remains the largest asparagus supplier in Southern Asia, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a X% share.

In Nepal, asparagus exports expanded at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (X% per year) and Pakistan (X% per year).

For the third consecutive year, Southern Asia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of asparagus, which increased by X% to X tons in 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asparagus imports skyrocketed to $X in 2023. In general, imports recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons) and Maldives (X tons) represented roughly X% of total imports in 2023.
