Plywood Market Size in SADC
In 2023, the SADC plywood market decreased by X% to $X for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Overall, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2022, and then declined sharply in the following year.
In value terms, plywood exports reduced notably to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Tanzania was the largest exporter of plywood in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X cubic meters, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. South Africa (X cubic meters) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malawi (X%).
Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the plywood exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, South Africa (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Malawi experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Tanzania (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa and Malawi saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X), South Africa ($X) and Malawi ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2023, with a combined X% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per cubic meter in 2023, dropping by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per cubic meter), while Tanzania ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

In value terms, plywood imports plummeted to $X in 2023. In general, imports saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the key importer of plywood in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X cubic meters, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X cubic meters), Angola (X cubic meters), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X cubic meters), Mozambique (X cubic meters) and Zambia (X cubic meters), together committing a X% share of total imports. Seychelles (X cubic meters) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mozambique, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Seychelles and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per cubic meter, reducing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of X%. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per cubic meter), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
