In 2023, the average yield of vegetables in Africa dropped modestly to X tons per ha, standing approx. at the year before. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2023, the growth of the vegetable yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2023, overseas shipments of vegetables decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by X% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by X%. In value terms, vegetable exports rose significantly to $X in 2023. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by X% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2023 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of vegetables, namely Egypt, Morocco and Ethiopia, represented more than half of total export. Tanzania (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an X% share, followed by South Africa (X%) and Mozambique (X%). Niger (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest vegetable supplying countries in Africa were Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and Ethiopia ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Tanzania, South Africa, Mozambique and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Among the main exporting countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, surging by X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of X%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2023, Egypt (X tons), distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) represented the key importers of vegetables, together creating X% of total imports. Mozambique (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Uganda (X%), Mozambique (X%), Morocco (X%), Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Guinea (X%), Mauritania (X%), Somalia (X%), Sudan (X%) and Kenya (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Senegal, Algeria and Djibouti experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Morocco (X p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (X p.p.), Mozambique (X p.p.) and Uganda (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2023, the share of Djibouti (X p.p.), Senegal (X p.p.) and Algeria (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported vegetables in Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with an X% share of total imports. It was followed by Somalia, with a X% share.
