The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +91.0% against 2012 indices. Over the period under review, global consumption attained the peak volume in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The global woven carpet market revenue fell to $13B in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, the total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. Consumption By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2022 were China (249M square meters), the United States (223M square meters) and Egypt (205M square meters), together accounting for 44% of global consumption. India, Turkey, Sweden, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Bangladesh, Germany and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of +32.3%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($2.7B), the United States ($1.9B) and China ($1.4B) constituted the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2022, with a combined 46% share of the global market. Turkey, Sweden, Indonesia, Iran, Germany, the UK, Iraq, Bangladesh and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Sweden, with a CAGR of +32.5%, saw the highest growth rate of market size among the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the highest levels of woven carpet per capita consumption was registered in Sweden (5,094 square meters per 1000 persons), followed by Egypt (1,933 square meters per 1000 persons), Iraq (978 square meters per 1000 persons) and Turkey (974 square meters per 1000 persons), while the world average per capita consumption of woven carpet was estimated at 197 square meters per 1000 persons.

Production

In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was decline in production of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings, when its volume decreased by -0.2% to 1.5B square meters. In general, the total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +85.7% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Global production peaked at 1.5B square meters in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, woven carpet production shrank to $12.8B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 70%. Over the period under review, global production attained the maximum level at $23.5B in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Turkey (498M square meters), China (329M square meters) and Egypt (208M square meters), with a combined 67% share of global production. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $6.4B, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports By Country

In 2022, the United States (228M square meters) represented the major importer of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings, generating 31% of total imports. Germany (44M square meters) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Iraq (41M square meters). All these countries together held approx. 12% share of total imports. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +13.6% from 2012-2022. Libya and Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of the United States (+15 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($1.8B) constitutes the largest market for imported woven carpets and other woven textile coverings worldwide, comprising 33% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($412M), with a 7.5% share of global imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 3.8% share.

Over the period under review, total exports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 14%. The global exports peaked at 863M square meters in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, woven carpet exports reduced to $5.3B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 22%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $6.3B, and then declined in the following year.

Exports By Country

Turkey was the main exporting country with an export of around 417M square meters, which reached 58% of total exports. China (85M square meters) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by India (8.3%) and Belgium (5.3%). Germany (13M square meters) held a little share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the woven carpets and other woven textile coverings exports, with a CAGR of +5.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+2.9%) and Germany (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+10 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while China and Belgium saw its share reduced by -3.7% and -3.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($2.3B) remains the largest woven carpet supplier worldwide, comprising 43% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($688M), with a 13% share of global exports. It was followed by China, with a 10% share.

In Turkey, woven carpet exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+7.7% per year) and China (+2.6% per year).
