Tomato Price in Portugal (FOB) - 2023
The average tomato export price stood at $324 per ton in August 2023, which is down by -60.2% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, posted moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 when the average export price increased by 215% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $2,006 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Spain.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Spain amounted to +2.5% per month.
Tomato Price in Portugal (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average tomato import price amounted to $1,206 per ton, surging by 16% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a noticeable expansion from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.8% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, tomato import price decreased by -26.6% against April 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 38% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,642 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($2,012 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($1,055 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+10.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tomato Exports in Portugal
In 2022, approx. 156K tons of tomatoes were exported from Portugal; picking up by 46% on 2021. Overall, exports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 63%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, tomato exports reached $78M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 22%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In 2022, overseas purchases of tomatoes were finally on the rise to reach 52K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
