Sweet Potato Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2022

The average sweet potato import price stood at $1,085 per ton in 2022, reducing by -5.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 35%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,213 per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($1,224 per ton), while the price for Tonga ($387 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Sweet Potato Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2023

The average sweet potato export price stood at $1,115 per ton in July 2023, with a decrease of -3.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 when the average export price increased by 14% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,381 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Australia ($1,115 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR amounted to $1,115 per ton.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (-1.3%).

Sweet Potato Imports in New Zealand

Sweet potato imports into New Zealand declined sharply to 233 tons in 2022, with a decrease of -48.7% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports recorded a precipitous shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 17%.

In value terms, sweet potato imports fell remarkably to $253K in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a dramatic decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 36%.

In value terms, sweet potato exports soared to $543K in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a significant increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
