Potato Price in Bulgaria (CIF) - 2023
The average potato import price stood at $615 per ton in July 2023, with an increase of 64% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated resilient growth from August 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +7.5% over the last eleven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, potato import price increased by +88.7% against March 2023 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($2,633 per ton), while the price for Greece ($444 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Potato Price in Bulgaria (FOB) - 2022
The average potato export price stood at $338 per ton in 2022, increasing by 20% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, potato export price increased by +36.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 51%. The export price peaked at $423 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($1,425 per ton), while the average price for exports to Greece ($289 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+14.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Potato Imports in Bulgaria
In 2022, potato imports into Bulgaria amounted to 50K tons, growing by 4.3% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible contraction.
In value terms, potato imports skyrocketed to $15M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a slight decline.
