The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 16%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 219M units, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +15.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Italy (+1.7 p.p.), Germany (+1.7 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of the United States (-2.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($184M), Germany ($156M) and the UK ($66M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 37% share of global imports. The Netherlands, France, Italy, Poland, Thailand, Canada, Spain, Belgium, Mexico and Chile lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +11.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

The average plastic lavatory seat import price stood at $5.2 per unit in 2022, surging by 2.2% against the previous year. At the same time, the Netherlands (+21.6%), Turkey (+8.5%), Bulgaria (+6.7%), Austria (+4.3%), Germany (+2.8%) and Spain (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +21.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Italy (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bulgaria (+2.7 p.p.), the Netherlands (+2.3 p.p.) and Turkey (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Italy and China saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -5.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($441M) remains the largest plastic lavatory seat supplier worldwide, comprising 42% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($107M), with a 10% share of global exports. It was followed by Bulgaria, with an 8.3% share.
