Newspaper Price in Finland (CIF) - 2023

The average newspaper import price stood at $474 per thousand units in August 2023, with an increase of 7.4% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated buoyant growth from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +5.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, newspaper import price increased by +18.7% against May 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 an increase of 37% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in August 2023.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Denmark ($8.8 per unit), while the price for Estonia ($71.0 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+34.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Newspaper Price in Finland (FOB) - 2023

In August 2023, the average newspaper export price amounted to $270 per thousand units, declining by -1.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated noticeable growth from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, newspaper export price decreased by -10.5% against May 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 when the average export price increased by 93% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $0.3 per unit. From June 2023 to August 2023, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Belgium ($277 per thousand units) and Germany ($269 per thousand units), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($242 per thousand units) and the Netherlands ($260 per thousand units) were amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sweden (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Newspaper Imports in Finland

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of newspapers, journals and periodicals decreased by -8.6% to 79M units in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +18.7% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +67.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 86M units, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, newspaper imports fell to $21M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $24M, and then contracted in the following year.

Newspaper Exports in Finland

In 2022, approx. 22M units of newspapers, journals and periodicals were exported from Finland; waning by -19.3% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports faced a sharp decline. The exports peaked at 98M units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, newspaper exports contracted rapidly to $3.9M in 2022. In general, exports recorded a precipitous shrinkage. The smallest decline of -18.3% was in 2021. The exports peaked at $16M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
