Malt Price in China (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average malt export price amounted to $712 per ton, with a decrease of -3.4% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 when the average export price increased by 10% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $737 per ton in August 2023, and then dropped in the following month.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In September 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Myanmar ($782 per ton) and Sri Lanka ($745 per ton), while the average price for exports to Cameroon ($640 per ton) and Cambodia ($647 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Myanmar (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Malt Price in China (CIF) - 2023
The average malt import price stood at $963 per ton in September 2023, shrinking by -4.1% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 25% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1,070 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($1,048 per ton) and the Netherlands ($988 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($878 per ton) and the UK ($912 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Malt Exports in China
In 2022, the amount of malt exported from China was estimated at 409K tons, picking up by 14% on 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight decline.
In value terms, malt exports surged to $236M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Malt Imports in China
For the fourth consecutive year, China recorded growth in overseas purchases of malt, which increased by 18% to 14K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 173%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, malt imports skyrocketed to $10M in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 165% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
