Leather Price in China (CIF) - 2022
In 2021, the average leather import price amounted to $2.4 per square meter, increasing by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $4 per square meter in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($13 per square meter), while the price for Kazakhstan ($1 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Leather Price in China (FOB) - 2022
In 2021, the average leather export price amounted to $10 per square meter, with an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $12 per square meter. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($11 per square meter), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($4.5 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bangladesh (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Leather Imports in China
In 2022, imports of leather into China shrank sharply to 567M square meters, reducing by -42.3% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 1.9%. Imports peaked at 1.1B square meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, leather imports dropped to $2.1B in 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 36%. Imports peaked at $2.5B in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Leather Exports in China
In 2022, exports of leather from China contracted notably to 76M square meters, with a decrease of -20.4% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 95M square meters, and then fell significantly in the following year.
In value terms, leather exports shrank modestly to $920M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +49.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $952M, and then fell in the following year.
