In value terms, hand-made lace production contracted to $109M in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 24%. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $122M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

Syrian Arab Republic (8K tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hand-made lace production, accounting for 55% of total volume. Moreover, hand-made lace production in Syrian Arab Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, China (1.5K tons), sixfold. Turkey (1.3K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9.1% share.

Imports

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs, when their volume increased by 17% to 3.2K tons. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 110% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 4.4K tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hand-made lace imports expanded slightly to $25M in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $34M. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of global imports failed to regain momentum.

Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +88.8% from 2012-2022. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-11.2%) and Bangladesh (-14.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Philippines (+27 p.p.), Myanmar (+9.2 p.p.), Cambodia (+7.5 p.p.), India (+5.9 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+4.2 p.p.), Egypt (+2.2 p.p.), Russia (+2.1 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-15.2 p.p.) and Bangladesh (-18 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cambodia ($6.5M) constitutes the largest market for imported hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs worldwide, comprising 26% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($3.2M), with a 13% share of global imports. It was followed by the Philippines, with an 8.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Cambodia totaled +33.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-0.3% per year) and the Philippines (+30.9% per year).

Over the period under review, total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 79%. The global exports peaked at 2.8K tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Turkey was the main exporter of hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs in the world, with the volume of exports accounting for 934 tons, which was near 45% of total exports in 2022. China (398 tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by India (237 tons) and Israel (180 tons). All these countries together held near 39% share of total exports. The following exporters - Pakistan (45 tons) and the United States (33 tons) - each finished at a 3.8% share of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +14.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Israel (+39.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +39.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, India (-3.6%), Pakistan (-5.5%), the United States (-5.6%) and China (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+32 p.p.) and Israel (+8.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of the United States (-1.6 p.p.), Pakistan (-2.1 p.p.), India (-6.9 p.p.) and China (-21.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Turkey ($7M) emerged as the largest hand-made lace supplier worldwide, comprising 44% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($3.4M), with a 21% share of global exports. It was followed by Israel, with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled +13.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-5.4% per year) and Israel (+34.0% per year).

Export Prices By Country

The average hand-made lace export price stood at $7,701 per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -16.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $11,934 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($12,848 per ton), while Pakistan ($2,076 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
