Coking coal, also known as metallurgical coal, is a type of coal that is used in the production of coke, which is a key component in the steelmaking process. The historical prices of coking coal have been subject to various factors such as supply and demand dynamics, geopolitical events, and global economic conditions.
Over the past few decades, the price of coking coal has experienced significant fluctuations. In the early 2000s, there was a surge in demand for steel, particularly from emerging economies such as China, which drove up the demand for coking coal. As a result, the price of coking coal reached record highs.
However, in the aftermath of the global financial crisis in 2008, steel production declined, leading to a drop in demand for coking coal. This, coupled with an increase in supply as new mines came into production, caused the price of coking coal to plummet.
From 2010 to 2016, the price of coking coal remained relatively stable, with minor fluctuations. However, in mid-2016, the industry experienced a supply disruption due to weather-related events, particularly in Australia, which is one of the largest producers of coking coal. This resulted in a significant spike in the price of coking coal.
In 2017, the price of coking coal started to decline as supply disruptions eased and new mines came online. The boom in the electric vehicle industry also impacted the price of coking coal as it resulted in a shift away from traditional steelmaking methods towards electric arc furnace (EAF) technology, which requires less coking coal.
In recent years, the price of coking coal has been relatively stable. However, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on global steel production and therefore the demand for coking coal. The lockdown measures implemented by various countries to contain the spread of the virus have resulted in a decline in steel demand, leading to lower prices for coking coal.
It is important to note that the historical prices of coking coal are influenced by a wide range of factors, and the market is highly volatile. Therefore, it is essential for market participants to closely monitor these factors and stay updated on the latest market developments to make informed decisions.

This article provides a list of the top importers of coal in 2022, including Japan, India, China, South Korea, Germany, Turkey, Malaysia, Netherlands, Philippines, and Brazil. These countries heavily rely on coal as a source of energy for electricity generation and industrial processes. However, as the world moves towards cleaner energy sources, the future of coal imports is uncertain.
In 2020, the decline in the global coal market gathered momentum, against the Covid-19 pandemic. The low cost of natural gas, combined with the development of alternative energy sources and stricter environmental regulations, are pushing the coal energy sector into stagnation. In the medium term, only the metallurgical industry is set to see a stable demand for coal.
The global coal trade amounted to X million USD in 2015, fluctuating mildly over the period under review, with a consistent downward trend in the last four years. A slight drop in 2009 was followed by brief recovery over the next two years, until
