Animal Feed Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average animal feed export price amounted to $1,759 per ton, picking up by 8.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a modest increase from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, animal feed export price increased by +54.2% against July 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2023 when the average export price increased by 42% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $2,348 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to September 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($3,154 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($455 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+14.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Animal Feed Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average animal feed import price amounted to $1,574 per ton, with a decrease of -5.2% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 an increase of 17% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $2,031 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($4,261 per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($882 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Animal Feed Exports in the United States
In 2022, overseas shipments of animal and pet feed decreased by -12.5% to 1.3M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports recorded a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 6.6% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 1.5M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, animal feed exports rose remarkably to $1.9B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Animal Feed Imports in the United States
In 2022, supplies from abroad of animal and pet feed decreased by -3.1% to 602K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.1% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +40.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 38%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 621K tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, animal feed imports expanded sharply to $984M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.7% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +50.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
