Decline of 8% in China's Smart Card Export to $156M in June 2023

China Smart Card Exports

In June 2023, approximately 1.3B units of cards incorporating an electronic integrated circuit (smart card) were exported from China; shrinking by -12.4% on May 2023 figures. In general, exports continue to indicate a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 when exports increased by 22% m-o-m. The exports peaked at 1.6B units in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to June 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, smart card exports reduced to $156M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when exports increased by 26% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 183M units in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to June 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum. China Smart Card Exports By Country (Million USD)

Exports by Country

Bangladesh (114M units), Vietnam (69M units) and the United States (51M units) were the main destinations of smart card exports from China, with a combined 18% share of total exports.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the biggest increases were in Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +2.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for smart card exported from China were the United States ($12M), Indonesia ($6.1M) and Bangladesh ($4.2M), together comprising 14% of total exports.

Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +2.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In June 2023, the smart card price amounted to $122 per thousand units (FOB, China), rising by 5.6% against the previous month. Over the period from June 2022 to June 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 an increase of 12% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $127 per thousand units in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to June 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($358 per thousand units), while the average price for exports to Bangladesh ($37.0 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
