October 2023 Sees Brazil's Cheese Imports Surge to $19M

Brazil Cheese Imports

Cheese imports into Brazil soared to 3.9K tons in October 2023, rising by 16% on the previous month's figure. Overall, total imports indicated mild growth from October 2022 to October 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, imports decreased by -4.4% against August 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when imports increased by 44% m-o-m.

In value terms, cheese imports rose markedly to $19M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. Over the period under review, total imports indicated mild growth from October 2022 to October 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, imports decreased by -12.5% against August 2023 indices. Imports by Country

In October 2023, Argentina (3.2K tons) constituted the largest cheese supplier to Brazil, with a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, cheese imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uruguay (599 tons), fivefold.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Argentina totaled +1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Uruguay (+4.6% per month) and France (+7.6% per month).

In value terms, Argentina ($14M) constituted the largest supplier of cheese to Brazil, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uruguay ($3.6M), with a 19% share of total imports.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Argentina was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Uruguay (+5.6% per month) and France (+7.4% per month).

Imports by Type

Unripened or uncured cheese (2.5K tons), cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed (1.3K tons) and processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) (44 tons) were the main products of cheese imports to Brazil, with a combined 99% share of total imports. Cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered and cheese, blue-veined (not grated, powdered or processed) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 0.7%.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by cheese, blue-veined (not grated, powdered or processed) (with a CAGR of +4.2%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, unripened or uncured cheese ($10M), cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed ($8.1M) and processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) ($279K) were the most imported types of cheese in Brazil, with a combined 98% share of total imports. Cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered and cheese, blue-veined (not grated, powdered or processed) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 1.7%.

Import Prices by Country

In October 2023, the cheese price stood at $4,878 per ton (CIF, Brazil), dropping by -5.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2023 when the average import price increased by 3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $5,491 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to October 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($8,795 per ton), while the price for Argentina ($4,434 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
