Export of Bleached Sulphate Pulp in Brazil Decreases Slightly to $7.2B in 2023

Brazil Bleached Sulphate Pulp Exports

After ten years of growth, shipments abroad of bleached sulphate pulp decreased by -4.6% to 18M tons in 2023. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +93.7% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 19M tons, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp exports declined to $7.2B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +25.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Exports by Country

China (8.9M tons) was the main destination for bleached sulphate pulp exports from Brazil, accounting for a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, bleached sulphate pulp exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (2.6M tons), threefold. Italy (1.4M tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.8% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China stood at +12.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+3.4% per year) and Italy (+4.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($3.2B) remains the key foreign market for bleached sulphate pulp exports from Brazil, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($1.1B), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.2% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China totaled +9.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+1.3% per year) and Italy (+2.3% per year).

Exports by Type

Wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of non-coniferous wood (18M tons) was the largest type of bleached sulphate pulp exported from Brazil, with a 99% share of total exports. It was followed by wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of coniferous wood (197K tons), with a 1.1% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of non-coniferous wood exports stood at +6.7%.

In value terms, wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of non-coniferous wood ($7B) remains the largest type of bleached sulphate pulp exported from Brazil, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of coniferous wood ($170M), with a 2.4% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the value of wood pulp; chemical wood pulp, soda or sulphate, (other than dissolving grades), semi-bleached or bleached, of non-coniferous wood exports totaled +3.8%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the bleached sulphate pulp price amounted to $393 per ton (FOB, Brazil), which is down by -4.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 20%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $540 per ton. From 2019 to 2023, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($553 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($347 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+0.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
